Recognized as the third most diverse university in the United States, UMass Boston is on a transformative journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
In 2023, UMass Boston’s commitment to enhancing its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure saw remarkable progress. The year was highlighted by significant achievements in the utilization and expansion of EV charging facilities on campus, including:

A 64% increase in kilowatt-hours (kWh) utilized

A 42% increase in charging instances

A 103% increase in net duration of charging sessions

A 57% increase in overall utilization
These impressive metrics underscore UMass Boston’s dedication to supporting sustainable transportation options and its role in encouraging the campus community to adopt EVs.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, UMass Boston engaged in general electrification education last year, aimed at raising awareness and understanding of sustainable energy solutions among students, faculty, and staff. This educational initiative is part of a broader strategy to weave sustainability into the fabric of campus life.
Looking ahead to 2024, UMass Boston has outlined goals aligned with the university’s Energy & Carbon Master Plan. Key initiatives include:

Advancing energy efficiency projects and transitioning from natural gas to more sustainable options like seawater exchange and electricity, with the potential integration of geothermal energy.

Moving forward with the construction design of an electrified central utilities plant, building upon feasibility studies for enhanced seawater pump house infrastructure.
