Saluting the Mankato Area Foundation

The Mankato Area Foundation (MAF) has been a long-time participant in Recharge America’s work. So long, in fact, that it’s fair to call them part of the founding DNA of our place-based approach.

Some of our earliest and most durable lessons about what actually makes community-level electrification efforts work came out of Mankato: the importance of assembling thoughtful local coalitions, grounding strategy in real community priorities, and treating electrification not as a standalone technology program, but as a practical tool for improving everyday life. MAF has been a consistent thought partner in that evolution and has emerged as a national leader among community foundations, demonstrating how electrification can advance core community goals such as livability, talent attraction and retention, and long-term economic resilience.

One early example of how MAF is translating those resources into practical local impact is support for a new food rescue coordinator position at the Region Nine Development Commission. This work ensures that food that would otherwise be wasted is redirected to food shelves, clinics, and meal programs serving those with the greatest need. It’s a powerful reminder of how locally rooted institutions can steward resources to maximize real community benefit.

That same logic—pairing resources with trusted local leadership to ensure effective deployment—is at the heart of the Recharge Mankato Roadmap. We will launch this roadmap this month to coincide with several exciting community projects that will establish Mankato as a regional leader in the coming years. Through this process, Recharge Mankato has worked with community leaders to map a place-based energy transition aligned with local priorities and realities: workforce pathways, mobility options, housing and business energy costs, and the broader economic opportunities emerging from a changing energy system. And, of course, MAF has been at the center of that convening and coordination work.

What MAF is demonstrating in Mankato is not just local success, but a replicable model for how community foundations can serve as trusted stewards of place-based climate and electrification strategies.

Congratulations to MAF for the impact you’re driving in Mankato, and for setting a standard that communities across the country can learn from.
